I Always Need Questions

>> Wednesday, April 1, 2009

First an announcement: For the next two months, I'm forgoing tarot questions. Up until recently, I was getting a steady supply of those and, truthfully, they're generally not very interesting for anyone but the questioner. On October 1, I'll open it back up to tarot questions, but I'm going to limit the number to two per month so people can still come here to learn more general stuff.
I am a writer, a novelist, a short story writer, a poet an essayist, a humorist and a blogger. I am a scientist, an engineer, a rocket scientist, a mathematician, and a proponent of logic and education. I’m a thinker, a philosopher, a historian, a music lover, political commentator, and art lover. I am interested in the occult and magic and wizardry, palmistry and tarot (and can read tarot).

I am also a mother 0f a teenager, a baby and a special needs boy, who are all great kids and all great pains in the butt other times. I am an older sister, a daughter, a friend. I have lost a father and know what it’s like to live through emotional abuse. I have dealt with mental and physical problems, from dyslexia to diabetes, disassociative personality disorder to bipolar, extreme passivity to well and truly being-an-assedness.

I’m a jack of all trades, a master of none of them. I am a good listener. Ask me questions, ask for a tarot reading. Ask for an opinion. Tell me your troubles. I'm here for you.

You can post questions on any post and I'll answer them or you can post your questions here. I'll take questions however I can get them.

A note of caution, there are subjects I stink at. I'll do my best to answer anyway, but I can't make promises.

Subjects where you might want to go elsewhere:
  • Managing money in any way or doing anything clever with finances. I've had a bankruptcy and am not qualified to tell anyone how to manage their money.
  • Making money on the web. There are lots of people who know how to do this but I am not one of them and I'm not terribly interested in learning about it. I write a blog for my own entertainment, not money. Nothing wrong with making money from it, but it's just not a priority with me.
  • How to fix computer/software problems. When I get in a jam, I call someone who would really know. I am not the one to call.
  • Legal questions. Professionals get paid a great deal to answer these sort of questions, for a reason. I'm not qualified.
I'm also not an expert on:
  • Astronomy (as opposed to space exploration and the like)
  • Theoretical Physics
  • Medicine
  • Biology
However, I'm interested in those subjects so I will happily go look it up. Don't get me wrong, you can ask anything you want, but bear in mind that some topics will glean you better answers than others.

Stephanie, I have a question. Is it really possible to earn a living from blogging? I've stumbled on some of the sites of the bloggers who claim to earn a six-figure salary. Of course, they're probably the "rock stars" of the blogosphere, and the rest of us are trying to get any gig we can. How likely is it to earn a decent amount, like a couple thousand a month?

I have a question. How do you stop friendship drama? Drama #1 Where I used to work there was constant drama. I was always accused of being the source of that drama, however I am friends with a co-worker and the drama persist almost 2 years after I left. I realize now that this co-worker that I'm friends with is the likely perpetuator of the drama. She's the nicest person, truly, but I spoke with her today and got sucked into work drama and I don't even work there.
Drama #2 A woman whom I met on a mental health support group (who I email off and on about the health of each of our daughters) sent me a cryptic email wanting me to call her at work to discuss an issue. Turns out the woman wanted advice on "coming out" and has all kinds of husband drama (hacking her email, friend's email, etc.) I spoke with her today, but I just don't want to get involved with the drama. I gave her a resource for married women coming out, but I really don't want to be her "coming out" mentor. I didn't have one and I survived just fine. Also, she already told her parents and several other relatives and they are all very supportive.

What is it about me that is attracting this drama? I have no friends to speak of, other than the former co-worker. I have more than my fair share of personal drama. I need some drama free friends in my real life, not just online. I'm serious!

Good question, Lola, though, truthfully, I probably won't have the answer. But I can be a sympathetic ear.

It's summer break. What on earth is there to do that's free or really cheap for teens to keep them out of trouble?

I did find http://www.kidsbowlfree.com/ and signed up both my kids, but they are going to get tired of bowling.

We can't afford a sleepaway camp (but gosh we would love to have a break!) We will be signing them up for some short golf camps, but it's kind of hard due to their ages. My daughter is 16, so she has aged out of most programs, but she can't sign up for adult programs. Due to her illness, a part time job is out of the question right now.

Is there anything else you can think of that is free or cheap?

  • Stephanie Barr

    Damn fine question, Lola.

    I'm thinking...

Occasionally when I take my daughters to day care there is a sign posted saying some of the children have not been vaccinated. What risk does this pose to my children? Who is at a bigger risk in this situation: the unvaccinated kids or the vaccinated ones? I'm not trying to start a to-vaccinate-or-not debate, but I am curious about what all this means.

  • Stephanie Barr

It's a good question, Quadmama. You might want to give me some time.

I have a question. My co-worker is afraid of flying, so much so that he has to take medication to get on a plane and is a wreck the whole time he's in the air.

But this weekend he jumped out a plane. Granted, he did do it to celebrate his birthday and gave a jump gift to his mother for Mother's Day. She went too.

How is it that someone so deathly afraid of flying stepped out into the abyss, given that the only thing between him and death is a strong piece of nylon cord?

At what point is it OK to delete someone from your blogroll? I have some great cyber friends but some of them haven't updated their sites for 5 or more weeks. Life happens, I get that and I don't want to offend anyone, but don't know how to keep my site current with really old posts on my blogroll. Don't some host sites (ie: Today.com) lock you out if you go 4 weeks without posting?

  • Stephanie Barr

I'll put your questions into the queue, Henni and Quadmama.

    Hi,

I’m glad that I came across your blog. You have some very useful and interesting posts there. I will put a link to your blog from my site, if this is okay with you.

I help run a store called HiSunglasses.com; it’s not really a big one, but it’s getting there. Please have a look. If you could possibly place a small link of my site, that would be really great.

Have a great day and hope to hear from you.

    Happy blogging.

So i have a few questions most i dont think you will be able to answer since no one really has an answer which is why they trouble me so much but i just want your opinion on the matters. Sorry if my writing isnt very good im use to texting so not very good punctuation. Anyway i havent had the chance to read books from great minds like Newton or Einstein but i have read up alot of others summaries and comments about them but im fascinated with things like gravity, light, and the size of the universe along with how it works. Hmm how should i start off...

Might as well start out with the best i suppose. What do you think about white holes and about the chance that our universe isnt the only one. I mean how can we know for sure yet or ever know that there arent other universes at there other small condensed matter waiting to become a universe like ours and if so where and what kind of area are those other universes in is their time different than ours? Im sorry i know im asking unanswerable questions but like i said i just want your view on the matter. I will ask more questions based on your response to this one :)

  • Relax Max

    Dear answer lady:

I just had something disconcerting happen to me. I deleted a comment I had made because it seemed to rude. Does this mean I am turning into a considerate person? Or that I am trying to become better? It is a bit disconcerting. I used to just make honest comments and let the chips fall where they fell. Is this something I should worry about or should I just see if it passes? Any honest opinion would be appreciated.

  • Stephanie Barr

    Relax Max,

Excellent question. I can tackle it on Saturday and you can come by and see the answer when you check out the quotes you asked for.

Do you ever think there will be a limit to how advanced technology can get with the resources we have? I mean there has to be a limit to how small you can make the components to things and still have them work just as efficient and alot of advancements have to do with efficiency and making useful things easier to use by making them smaller. Do you ever think we will be able to manipulate atoms more efficiently

  • Patricia Rockwell

I have a tecnology question. Do you think we will see the computer, the television, and the cell phone combined into one device in the near future? If so, how far?

  • Jeff King

I know allot about the universe, there are several questions that get me thinking and kind of boggles the mind…
first one is Einstein's special relativity… the one part I have a hard time rapping my brain around is this.. if you was traveling the seed of light and light passed you it still would be passing you at the speed of light.. Hence the special relativity theory, this is where time space comes from… since light does not change then time and space has to change. Hence space-time…

So my question is this can you explain Einstein's special relativity in a way that us mere mortals can understand… because I fail to see how light could pass you at 186,000 mi/sec if you are traveling at 186,000 mi/sec yourself… but yet Einstein's special relativity states “The speed of light in vacuum has the same value c in all inertial frames of reference.” Meaning light or your perception is not changed upon your perspective or you relationship to it. Basically regular theory of relativity…

Hope my question is stated so you can understand where I am coming from and where I want you to take me… next time I will ask about dark matter and anti matter… maybe even black holes/worm holes… thx

  • Jeff King

sorry i didn't read the whole part of this page like this part...
"I'm also not an expert on:

Astronomy (as opposed to space exploration and the like)
    Theoretical Physics
    Medicine
    Biology"

but i would still like to hear your thoughts on the matter.. if not mearly i discussion on it.. thx

  • Stephanie Barr

I have put your question into my queue of questions. I won't promise I can answer it to your satisfaction. But I'll try.

  • Jeff King

you can just give me a tarot reading if you prefer... instead of going down that winding mess of Einstein's special relativity... it boggles the mind and takes alot of math to explain it...
i am not sure if you need my birth date to give me a reading, but here it is just incase...
10-19-74 i have never had a reading or fortune read... thx either one you want to do...

  • Stephanie Barr

I can do both. After all, I have no problem answering, I don't know or this is how I understand it, but it might be imperfect. I'll put a tarot reading in the queue, too. I don't do horoscopes so your birthday isn't pivotal, but, God, you're young.

I have that same question, when will I find love again. I've been divorced for five years now and am pretty tired of it. I took kid #4 to NASA today (you can do stuff like that when you're home schooling). We were at old mission control where the guy explained that the computers they used to control the Apollo missions had 256K RAM each, and each one was the size of the room we were in.

So 13 yo had just watched Apollo 13, and they said they had a computer in the command module, and they shunted its functions to the one in the LEM during their flight. My son wanted to know how they managed to package computers in the spaceships with their limited room when they filled basements here on earth.

It seemed like a pretty good question--and I happen to know a rocket scientist, so I'm turfing it to you.

No hurry. I know you're swamped right now. He'll still be curious when you get to it, I promise. Can't seem to stamp it out of him.

I am participating in the NaNoWriMo this year. Still going strong at day four, but one thing in my writing is starting to bug me:

From time to time I will fill the need to use italics for emphasis, as in "Now I was curious."
This I feel is a bad habit, much like using smileys in written communication, an unnecessary short-cut to something that could be better expressed through superior prose. Also, I just checked my most favourite fantasy book in the world, Rothfuss's "The Name of the Wind", and HE doesn't use any italics. Neither did Tolkien, or Shakespeare for that matter. Herbert does use italics to great effect in "Dune", but only to denote thoughts.

What do you think? Do you use italics? And how could I re-write "Now I was curious." without italics, and be sure that it is read as intended and not as "Now I was curious.", for example?

Maybe you can make this make sense for me.

When should I use Jeff said or said Jeff?

I use Jeff said when adding an adverb after, like so. "I am right" Jeff said reassuringly
And when I am not I use this “I am right” said Jeff

    Does it matter either way?
Is there a rule of thumb to follow?

    hi,
i used to have this friend of the opposite sex whom i treasured a lot, and it was always fun to hang out with him, despite only knowing him at the beginning of this year. suddenly, he seems to be avoiding me, i tried asking him, but he just dismissed the issue as saying that he is busy. as time goes by, it gets more and more obvious, and i am at lost of what is the problem here. it all seems too weird.is it possible for you to find out about the main reason he is acting this way or if we will ever return to being friends again? thank you Stephanie.

I am contemplating three distinct paths, can the cards indicate the better/best fit for me? They are:

    a. pursuing a MFA in Creative Writing, a 2+year course that would involve extensive commuting;

    b. a diploma in Massage Therapy that would last 8 months, and reduce the time spent with my husband to only weekends;

    c. combining certification in yoga for kids with an associate's degree in early childhood education with the objective of providing a niche daycare service for yoga-savvy moms.

I will not make a decision made purely on your readings, of course, but I am very curious to know what the cards might say about my choices, and about me.

    Thanks very much!

    hi stephanie,

back to your question on 'Will he call back?' sorry , my question was rather vague. let me put it in another way then, i just wanted to know how does he ( this guy friend of mine) really feel about me deep down.. he seems rather hard to read at times. is it possible if u could pull out a few cards? as in, how does he really feel about me from the time u pull out the cards and throughout this summer rather than past, present and future. is that possible for u to help find out? i'll have an open heart for what the card has got to say.

    thanks.

    Miss T.

This question might be lame, but I really want to know.

The mars rovers look simple to build, so why do they cost so much to build… actually I thought they would look cool and very complex.

I'm researching an article on high altitude airplane collisions in which the integrity of the pressurized passenger cabin is suddenly compromised. I would like a more detailed explanation on the term "explosive decompression" than I am finding on wikipedia. I'm guessing it means the person can't expel the air in his lungs fast enough and so his lungs explode. Probably preferable than living two minutes before he is killed by impact with the earth. Is that what it means?

If I may have two questions, the second is about terminal velocity. If a large object (a passenger airliner, say) reaches terminal velocity before impact, do smaller (or more aerodynamic) objects whose terminal velocity are higher (I assume) "pass" the airliner on the way down? Or does everything hit the ground at the same time?

I don't mean to make this too long, but the questions are related. Explosive decompression would, of course, tear out and blow out small interior parts of the main aircraft, but I don't fully understand why there would have to be such a wide debris field if everything had the same terminal velocity. So I am guessing they don't.

Finally, is this the same reason high altitude fighter pilots have to concentrate on forcing the air out of their lungs when they are breathing pressurized oxygen/air, or is that an old-wives tale?

(This research has to do with the 1956 collision of the TWA and United Airlines airplanes over the Grand Canyon.)

How do I remove the very strong odor of brunt food in my microwave. The burnt dish has been removed. I have tried cleaners, baking soda to clean the inside of the microwave. I've tried cooking other items to change the smell. But it still reeks of the brunt applesauce ! Help me PLEASE.
