For Ayda: Will I make it to New Zealand?

>> Sunday, October 18, 2009

Ayda asked: i have a question for your tarot cards. I'm planing to move, probably to New Zealand, in a few years. I just finished my study, still have some things to finish first. Is it going to happen?

Lots of travel tarot questions recently. Let's see what the cards have to say.

Past - Seven of Pentacles (Coins) - Nice card for building a base. This card speaks of selfless work, waiting for a dividend, eventual growth and eventual return on investment. If you've been pursuing education, this make excellent sense and argues your academic choices will eventually pay off.

Present - Ace of Pentacles (Coins) (Reversed) - In the reversed position, this card speaks of financial setbacks and penury, but also of working to repay those debts. Could reflect working hard to repay current debts to prepare for the future.

Future - Ace of Swords - This is one of the cards that overwhelmingly has positive characteristics (like triumph, decisive moves paying off and unbelievable luck) but has the potential for the opposite as well (bad news or a failure of something to materialize). I feel like the former is more appropriate, especially considering the auspicious card for your past, however, I'm going to pull one more card to make sure.

XIX The Sun - Yay, looks like I was right! Achievement, success, triumph, wealth and glory.

So, if going overseas is what you're hoping for, the cards appear to be on your side. Good luck!

For Avan: Will we move?

>> Saturday, October 10, 2009

Avan asked: We want to move away from the current place we are in and ASAP... any chance of that happening?

I presume you're looking for a tarot reading.

Past - Pentacles (Coins) VIII (reversed) - financial and work pressure, pitilessness. From this, I'd get the impression that you have been working in an environment that is focused primarily on profit, first, foremost, always, with pressure to perhaps cut corners, work long hours or compromise integrity in order to get that profit.

Present - Queen of Pentacles (Coins) - This card speaks of a different environment (or mindset), one that is focused on kindness and practicality, economical and ambitious in useful ways. There's a hint of environmental awareness and nurturing. If this is where you feel today, than the environment of the past was stifling and painful.

Future - Swords III - separation, absence, disappointment and getting hurt. Hmm. It's not clear but this card could indicate that rather than both of you moving, one of you will leave out of necessity - something that will put a strain on the situation. However, that's not necessarily the only explanation.

I'll pull a couple of cards for clarification.

Pentacles (Coins) I - this card speaks of material wealth, new job opportunities, perhaps a financial venture, and prosperity.

Knight of Wands - Ah, well someone appears to be traveling, if this card is accurate. Change of address, adventure, hasty decision and needing aggression in pursuit of goals.

From these cards, it would seem that there is travel/change of address ahead, but it might be more rushed than you like and not as smooth as it might be, perhaps including a separation. However, there is a potential for real financial gain.

For Shakespeare: Going On Vacation

>> Saturday, August 15, 2009

Shakespeare asked: If you could take a vacation anywhere (with your kids, or not), where would it be?

I'm not sure it's so much where it would be as it would be "how" it would be. I'd like to take a vacation where the last thing I need to worry about is how much I'm spending. I end up watching everything so closely (and still always overspend) that I rarely enjoy them.

However, if we assume money wasn't an issue. With my kids, I'd be looking at ways to enjoy myself without feeling harried or stressed. Perhaps a Disney cruise with my kids, where I could let them enjoy age appropriate activities if I needed some time alone or we could all frolic on their beach together or do some things together. My kids adore the beach but Galveston is frankly disgusting. I love my children but I'd like time where I'm not "on duty" and I also prefer a venue where I don't feel under pressure to do something.

Oddly enough, I might choose a cruise as well for just the Lee and I vacation. Again, so I wouldn't feel obligated to do anything. In my life, I feel I'm juggling the details of day to day life nearly every moment of every day. I'd like someone else to do so so I could relax.

I'm not limited to a cruise, though. Anywhere I can get a minimum set of amenities (like food and a place to sleep and plumbing) without having to tromp or go on rides or hit every tourist activity within X number of miles or hit each show... that's what I like. Whether a week in Hawaii or by a lake somewhere, makes no never mind to me.

Someday, of course, I'll probably take vacations that suit the husband or the kids--Disneyland, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Europe--but, for me, some relaxation sans itinerary is really what suits me best.

For Laura: Cheap Wi-Fi

>> Sunday, May 24, 2009

Laura said: Where I work (at a gym) I used to be able to get a good wireless signal very easily. However, it was an unlocked network, and they seem to have either cut its signal strength or closed it entirely, because it doesn't even show up anymore. I am able to sometimes get a signal if I go sit in the handicapped shower stall in the women's locker room. However, that gets cold and uncomfortable quite quickly, so I don't spend much time doing that. :) I have an Asus EeePC netbook. What options do I have in the United States to be able to get a signal without having to do the locker room dance?

Wouldn't it be lovely to have readily accessible wi-fi everywhere? It's not technologically impossible or even that difficult. It would make thing simple, but most places in the country (US) we don't have it. I'm not sure about the situation in other countries (although I think it's similar in Canada).

As a result, we are dependent on others when we're not in our homes (where we have the option of setting up our own wifi). Some locations have private wifi (locked) that requires a password. Some have private wifi that they will charge you to use (several airports have this), but costs vary and you're pretty much at their mercy.

I'm not an expert on this either. I have my own wifi network at home and I never work anywhere where network isn't part of the job. In fact, this only becomes an issue for me when I travel, but it can readily be an issue then. I expect, when I tell you what little I know, others will pop in and provide more insight into this discussion.

As for the free wifi, you're pretty much at one's mercy, too. If your gym doesn't have wifi as part of the deal, chances are you're tying in to someone else's private or business wifi. When you tie into private but open wifi, you're technically stealing a bit of their bandwidth. Chances are, it won't hurt anyone unless you're a hacker, but it does leave them vulnerable if you were doing anything unsavory or illegal. And, if they are already near the extent of their bandwidth, it can slow their network down appreciably.

The situation you describe sounds like you're tapping into someone else's network. There are homemade doohickies to try to build, but they tend to be bulky and I wouldn't personally bank on it. There are places that welcome patrons with free wifi, like many McDonalds, Subways, coffee shops, but that's only a help if you can get away.

If you can't find an available network, you have the option of getting a card for your computer that uses a cellular option. Unfortunately, these are not cheap and usually will add to your monthly cellular bill. You might be able to add it to your existing cellular plan relatively inexpensively, but it's a definite expense and it would depend on how much having it would mean to you. Still, such access is considerably less expensive than it used to be and anywhere where your cellphone has coverage, your computer likely would as well.

Now, I expect a dozen more expert individuals to give you even better advice, but this represents the extent of what I know on this subject.
